John 19:38-20:9

When was the last time you __________?

We read of 2 people _____________ on the first Easter, but I think many more _______ that day.

Jesus was ________________ dead . . . an explanation of what usually happened to the body of those crucified but God had other plans prophesied over 700 years earlier (Psalm 16:9-11 and Isaiah 53:9)

Joseph of Arimathea was a ___________ __________, on the Sanhedrin (highest ruling body), had become a believer but kept it quiet . . . and he had _______________ inside the _____________ ______________ . . .

God places His people in positions to accomplish His will: Why does God have you where you are? Certain people to ___________; Certain tasks that ________ ___________

In Egypt, dead bodies were embalmed. In Greece and Rome, they were often ______________. Jewish people would wrap dead bodies with long strips of linen, placing a lot of _____________ inside the wrapping . . . there wasn’t a _____________ . . . and a separate cloth was used for the _________

Joseph and Nicodemus (John 3:1-21 and John 7:50-51) had to hurry to take down Jesus body, prepare it for burial, and place it in a tomb before the start of the Sabbath . . . some women were watching (Luke 23:55-56) and I think they thought “_________ __________ ___________” as they planned on coming back after the Sabbath.

20:1 Just because John only mentions Mary Magdalene doesn’t mean there weren’t ________ __________ ___________

1. A group of women head to the tomb before dawn

2. Before the women arrive, angels appear to move the stone. The soldiers scatter.

3. The women find the stone is moved and decide they need to send for Peter & John. Mary Magdalene goes

to get them.

4. The other women, when the sun starts coming up, decide to look inside the tomb and they see two angels.

They are told to go tell the disciples. (Did they go to _____________ or ______________?)

5. Mary Magdalene finds Peter & John and they take off for the tomb (John’s funny comments)

6. Mary trails behind, arriving in the garden (not the tomb) where she is the first to encounter Jesus

V 2 Mary said “They have taken the Lord” but who is ‘they’? Maybe the religious leaders, or ____________,

or Joseph & Nicodemus, or ________ _______________.

V 5 John, who arrived first, didn’t _____ _______. He looked (blepo), something like glancing in

V 6-7 Peter enters the tomb; he looked (theoreo); he really looked ____ ___________ with a ____________

look . . . he saw the ______ __________ and it wasn’t with the linen cloths but folded up by itself.

V 8 John enters the tomb and he looked (orao), to see with ________________, to see with insight, we might

say, “_____, ____ __________”

John believes . . . it has something to do with the burial cloths

Who would steal the body without taking the linens and _____________

Jesus’ body was resurrected not resuscitated (to have life put back into the __________ _________) . . . Jesus body would have _________ ____________ the linens . . . the body was gone but the linens were not unwrapped.

Which of the 3 looks (with belief, casually, intently) do you look upon Jesus resurrection? (William Lane Craig (website, videos, books), Tim Keller’s ‘The Reason For God”, Lee Strobel’s “The Case For Christ’.)
